Scarlet and yellow are for Artillery. The triangle and bar represent a deflection fan and bar chart used for Artillery. The Lorraine cross is blue to represent the units Infantry origins, and represents battle service as Infantry in Europe, World War I and Artillery in World War II.

The crest is that of the New York Army National Guard.
The coat of arms was approved on 28 April 1966. It was amended to change the symbolism on 5 December 1966.
